The National Trust C-Strategy (iii)
The National Trust carbon stores in soils ....
Doug Warner, University of Hertford, presented the 'Land Carbon Management Plan for the National Trust’s Wallington Estate'. MJ Bell and F Worrall, Durham University estimated soil carbon in 700 samples across the 5,200 ha farmed estate. The report develops that work, and links soil carbon, environmental factors, land-use and farming methods. The report presents a blueprint that will hopefully be applicable to other sites. It highlights, for each farm unit,
- ‘priority habitats’ with above-average soil carbon
- ‘priority soil series’ where there is potential to create priority habitats, to conserve / increase soil carbon
- areas of below-mean soil carbon for a specified land-use, where a change in management could enhance it
- areas where soil carbon is decreasing, based on measurements above the mean for a land-use, but with a recent change in land-use which is likely to decrease it.
These findings could form the basis of new agri-environment funding for carbon conservation. The report was supported by Natural England.
